Radical prostatectomy was found to have lesser toxicity compared with the combination modalities for patients undergoing localized therapy for prostate cancer

Of the 47,387 patients enrolled, 39.7% experienced a genitourinary complication during the specific period. The most common included urinary incontinence (11.7%), kidney failure (8.8%), bladder disorder (2.9%), and cystitis (2.3%).

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment provides long-term relief for patients suffering from late radiation-induced injuries after treatment of cancer in the lower abdominal area. Five years after hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the positive effects remain. This has been shown in a study conducted at the University of Gothenburg.

Low-dose-rate brachytherapy has been increasingly utilized as a minimally invasive treatment option in patients with low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer. Following 1-2 years of treatment, a "bounce phenomenon" might occur in approximately 30% of patients undergoing low-dose-rate brachytherapy, characterized by a transient rise in prostate-specific antigen levels followed by a subsequent decrease.

SBRT may offer a safe alternative to CFRT after prostatectomy

“This approach could remove a major barrier to post-surgery radiation therapy,” explained senior author Amar U. Vitamin D Mitigated Side Effects of Cancer Treatment and Supported Bone Health

Despite the heterogeneity of methodologies across studies, evidence suggested that vitamin D plays a critical role in reducing treatment-associated adverse events, such as peripheral neuropathy, nausea, and fatigue. In addition, maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D may help preserve bone density, particularly in patients undergoing preoperative chemoradiotherapy.

More men with prostate cancer are avoiding unnecessary surgery

Prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death among men in the United States. Despite this, widespread adoption of prostate cancer screening has been controversial. Many primary care doctors worry that screening will lead to unnecessary surgery for men with low-risk prostate cancer and current guidelines recommend screening only after discussing the risk of overtreatment with the patient.

New study finds that exercise improves erectile function after treatment

The study was of 112 men who had previously undergone or were currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer and were concerned about sexual dysfunction, with one group going through normal care and the other having an additional six-months of supervised, group-based resistance and aerobic exercise. After the period, the men on the exercise programme had significantly higher erectile function scores.

Surgical Over-treatment Has Declined in Grade Group 1 Prostate Cancer

Among patients who received prostatectomy for grade group 1 disease in the SEER cohort, the likelihood of experiencing any higher risk feature increased from 26% in 2010 to 41% in 2020. In 2010 and 2020, respectively, the rates of biopsy grade group 2 or higher were 17% vs 28%, the rates of more than 50% biopsy cores were 10% vs 15%, and the rates of preoperative PSA levels of at least 10 were 9.2% vs 13%.

Advanced imaging and targeted therapy help men with prostate cancer safely defer surgery and radiation therapy

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among American men, with about one in eight diagnosed during their lifetime. Many of these cancers are low risk and grow so slowly they may never cause symptoms. But despite growing acceptance of active surveillance many men still opt for surgery or radiation out of fear the cancer could become dangerous, which can cause significant long-term side effects such as incontinence or sexual dysfunction.

To begin, the distinction between a genomic biomarker vs germline testing was mentioned. A genomic biomarker includes a measurable DNA or RNA characteristic that can be used to indicate normal biological processes, disease, or response to treatment. Germline testing is the analysis of DNA to identify genetic variations that may be associated with health risks or cancer predisposition.
